The Best Core Values I’ve Ever Seen (Video)

Vessel Health is building its brand on a set of inspired (and inspiring) principles.

Vessel Health is a small, pre-revenue company that is developing a personal wellness app allowing customers to test essential health metrics, such as nutrition, hydration, and toxin and stress levels, and then build and monitor their own wellness plans.

Vessel Health’s chief operating officer (and author of Lose Your Limits) Christian Chasmer recently helped me lead a Findaway Club webinar on using core values to unify your team around a set of core commitments and behaviors that will guide them through the ins and outs of daily business.

Vessel’s were flat out the best I’ve ever seen. Here they are:

Health over Wealth: We think long term in order to maximize the impact we can have on people’s wellbeing. We value impeccable science, innovation, transparency and ethical decisions over the creation of wealth.

We Are Optimizers: We are in constant pursuit of better — career performance, loving relationships, health and longevity.

We Ship Fucking Epic: We never settle for good enough, from an internal email to the tests we deliver, if we don’t love it, we don’t ship it.

We Get You: We make honorable agreements with each other and our customers with the help of structures and processes.

Note the total absence of what Patrick Lencioni calls “permission to play” values — e.g., “honesty,” “integrity,” or “customer focused” — values representing the very least you’d expect from a brand you’re going to do business with. Vessel wants to stand out from every other firm, so they go way beyond the basics.

Also note the uncompromising focus on doing right by its people: its colleagues, its customer, its world. By building change-the-world values into its DNA right from the start, Vessel is ensuring that its values will scale with the company as it grows.

And should Vessel be bought by a larger, strategic firm down the road, its mission will survive because its mission is inseparable from its operation.

Pretty amazing stuff, yes? To view my entire conversation with Christian and gain access to much more great content, visit the Findaway Club website and consider joining the club.

The Findaway Club exists to provide change-the-world startup and early-stage entrepreneurs with the resources and community that will help them advance their organizations. We’re online, nimble, and completely committed to the strategic success of our members.

Let me know how you’re baking your core values into your change-the-world company.

Sincerely,
