Six Steps to Scaling Startup Culture
You’ve built something special. Here’s how to keep it that way as you grow.
Hey Founder,
If you’re growing at a good clip and your headcount is growing, the chances are good you’re probably feeling a bit of strain on your culture, and it’s got you concerned. Don’t ignore the feeling. It’s important to maintain the essence of your purpose and the culture that supports it amidst rapid expansion.
But here's the thing: scaling a great culture isn't just feasible; it's exhilarating and advantageous for everyone involved. My own ventures have garnered accolades for their vibrant cultures, and I'm confident that yours can too if you follow these six essential steps:
Be intentional: Start by embedding cultural objectives into your playbook from the get-go. Whether it's aiming for a stellar internal net promoter score or setting clear cultural milestones, be deliberate in your approach.
Be authentic: Core values should be the heartbeat of your culture. Ensure they're not just words on paper but principles lived out by every team member.
Celebrate core values: Core values shouldn't gather dust; they should live in the open air. Establish a program that recognizes and celebrates employees who embody these values in their work. It's amazing how a little acknowledgement can go a long way.
Empower culture: As your company grows, so should the custodians of your culture. Delegate the responsibility to a dedicated Culture Club or similar body empowered to nurture and champion your culture.
Inspire culture: Beyond the confines of the workplace, explore avenues for team engagement aligned with your mission. Philanthropy, volunteerism, and community engagement are potent ways to ignite passion and purpose.
Reinforce culture: Consistently weave your culture into the fabric of your organization. From monthly meetings to new employee onboarding, keep the narrative alive. And don't underestimate the power of swag to reinforce identity and belonging.
Remember, culture isn't a static entity but a dynamic force that evolves with your business. Embrace the journey of scaling your culture, and let it fuel your growth. Share your experiences in nurturing your company's culture—it's a conversation worth having.
Sincerely,
